Marcel Rochas France

Period: 1950

Marc Lalique (1900–1977) was a brilliant French glass designer and technician who took on the enormous challenge of continuing and transforming the legacy of his father, the legendary genius of Art Nouveau and Art Deco, René Lalique.

His career was marked by revolutionizing the family brand and bringing it into modernity through several key milestones:

  • The Great Change: From Glass to Crystal: After his father's death in 1945, Marc took over the management of the company. His greatest historical contribution was replacing traditional glass production with lead crystal in the early 1950s. This gave rise to the current identity of the brand: a crystal of the highest purity with a unique play of light and the characteristic contrast between transparent surfaces and satin or frosted finishes.

  • Technical Innovation and Reconstruction: Having studied at the École des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, he possessed deep technical knowledge. He managed to completely restore and modernize the historic factory in Wingen-sur-Moder (damaged after World War II), adapting it to the demanding processes of blowing and molding crystal.

  • Icons of Perfume Design: Marc Lalique forged ties with Parisian haute couture. In addition to creating the amphora bottle for the Femme de Rochas in the 1940s, he created in 1948 the world-famous bottle of the two doves for the perfume L'Air du Temps by Nina Ricci, considered one of the masterpieces of fragrance design of all time.
