Sommerso

Designer (Attributed Flavio Poli)

Flavio Poli was born in 1900 in Chioggia, Italy, and was a key figure in 20th-century Murano glass design.

  • He trained as a ceramicist at the Istituto d'Arte di Venezia. He later transitioned to the art of glassmaking.

  • In 1929, he began his career in glass design at IVAM in Murano.

  • In 1930, he became associated with Seguso Vetri d'Arte, where he worked until 1963.

  • Poli is particularly known for his mastery of the Sommerso technique, which involved layering different colors of glass and then encasing them in a thick layer of transparent glass.

He won several awards:

  • The Compasso d'Oro in 1954 for a blue-ruby glass vase he designed for Seguso.

  • Five Grand Prix awards at various Milan Triennials.

His works can be found in several museums:

  • MoMA New York.

  • Murano Glass Museum.

  • Museo Boncompagni Ludovisi in Rome.

  • The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
