It is a luxurious and traditional fabric, characterized by having reversible and contrasting designs that are formed through the weaving process on a loom (traditionally a Jacquard loom).
Contrast Effect (Matte and Shine): The design is created by playing with the way light reflects on the threads. Generally, the background of the fabric has a satin or shiny texture, while the design or motif (which is usually floral, geometric, or vegetal) presents a matte texture or vice versa.
Structure and Texture: It is a flat fabric but with body, where the weft and warp intertwine in a complex manner.
Origins and History: Its name comes from the ancient city of Damascus (Syria), which was an important center for trade and production of this technique during the Silk Road in the Middle Ages. From there, the knowledge of weaving spread to Europe (especially to Italy and France during the Renaissance and Baroque periods).
